MICRONEEDLING
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment designed to rejuvenate the skin. Using a device with fine needles, tiny punctures are made in the top layer of the skin, prompting your body to produce new collagen and elastin. This results in improved skin texture and firmness, and can help reduce scars, acne scars, pore size, and stretch marks. For enhanced results, microneedling can be combined with topical treatments like PRP (platelet-rich plasma), also known as the Vampire Facial, a popular choice among celebrities.
At RichSkin, we use the SkinPen by Bellus Medical, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. The SkinPen creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural healing process while minimizing cellular damage. This leads to effective remodeling of scar tissue while preserving the overall structure of the skin.
The wound-repair process involves three phases:
Inflammation: Microneedling triggers your immune system to disinfect the area, remove debris, increase blood flow, and start tissue creation. Proliferation: The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix, and a new network of blood vessels forms. Remodeling: New dermal tissues and blood vessels replace the wound. The effectiveness of SkinPen is demonstrated by clinical trials, where 90% of subjects reported they would recommend the procedure to family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about your Microneedling SkinPen®â€‹ treatment
BEFORE THE TREATMENT
1. What device does RickSkin use for microneedling?
RichSkin uses the SkinPen by Bellus Medical, the world's first FDA-cleared microneedling device. Clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for individuals aged 22 and up, the SkinPen requires as few as three non-invasive, affordable treatments spaced 30 days apart. You can enjoy improved appearance for up to six months after your final treatment, helping you step out with renewed confidence.

2. Am I a good candidate for this treatment? / Will this treatment work for me?
Unlike some alternatives, SkinPen has been clinically proven effective for both women and men across a wide range of skin tones, from light to very dark. When treatments are properly spaced and supervised by a physician or nurse practitioner, SkinPen can be safely used for many years.
3. How many sessions will I need to see results?
Most patients undergo 3-6 treatments per area, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The exact number of sessions needed will vary based on individual needs and the specific area being treated. After the initial treatments, 1-2 maintenance sessions per year are recommended to sustain results.
4. How often/far apart should the treatments be?
4-6 weeks apart.
5. Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?
Ensure your skin is clean before your treatment. Avoid applying lotions, creams, perfumes, powders, or makeup, and steer clear of tanning. Remove all jewelry from the treatment area. If there is excessive hair in the treatment area, shave it beforehand. Be ready to provide your medical history, as your provider will likely ask for this information.
DURING THE TREATMENT
1. How long does a treatment session last?
Approximately 45 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
2. What does the treatment feel like?
It feels like tiny pins on your skin followed by a little zap. Your face will then feel warm, like a sunburn.
3. Will it be painful?
SkinPen microneedling treatments might be slightly uncomfortable but are generally not painful. You may experience intense heat, similar to a sunburn, and your face will appear red immediately after the treatment. For more intensive sessions, a topical numbing cream can be applied to help minimize any discomfort.
AFTER THE TREATMENT
1. How will my skin feel after my treatment?
Your skin may feel warm, similar to a sunburn, and can remain red for a few hours to a few days, depending on the treatment intensity. Be sure to follow the pre- and post-treatment instructions carefully for optimal results.
2. How long will the results last and are they permanent?
After your final treatment, you'll see continued improvement in your results. However, depending on how your skin responds, a touch-up session may be needed approximately every 6 months to maintain optimal results.
3. Is there any downtime/How long is recovery time?
Yes, there is some downtime, but it's relatively brief—typically 48 hours post-treatment (or up to 5 days for more aggressive sessions), compared to up to 10 days for lasers or other treatments. During the first 24-48 hours, avoid applying or rubbing anything on your skin, including water or sweat, so skip activities like hot yoga. After 24 hours, you can apply makeup and resume your regular skincare routine. Apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30), preferably without chemicals, and avoid rigorous exercise, hot baths, or massages on the treatment area for the first 2 days. Keep your skin clean, protected from the sun, and avoid tanning.
4. Do I need to do anything after my treatment?
If your skin feels hot, you can use a fan to help cool it down. Avoid touching or scratching the treatment area. For the first 24 hours, do not apply lotion, makeup, or any other products, including water. After 24 hours, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30, preferably without chemicals. Refrain from rigorous exercise, hot baths, or massages on the treatment area for the first 2 days. Keep your skin clean and protected from the sun, and avoid tanning. RichSkin will provide a post-care skin regimen—simply follow the instructions included.
5. If I got a treatment on my face, can I put makeup up on right after?
You should wait until 24 hours after your treatment to apply any makeup or lotion.
